A European leap forward is needed

Un sursaut européen est nécessaire

Since Trump is back in power, the United States is no longer an ally of democratic countries. Donald Trump and his government regularly echo Putin’s theses and call themselves predators.

1. The USA has claimed that it wants to take over Greenland, Panama and Canada against the will of the people.

2. Trump and Putin claim to defend freedoms, but they are the freedoms of predators: the freedom of the strong to oppress the weak. They defend the freedom to incite hatred, to monopolize wealth and not to show solidarity with the weakest. For example, the United States has stopped funding international organizations and NGOs. Dialogue and solidarity no longer count. It’s the law of the strong that oppresses the weak, even if it’s against their economic interests. These are authoritarian, violent regimes with no moral compass.

3. The United States is going to negotiate the fate of Ukraine alone with Putin, without the Ukrainians or the Europeans. They have declared that they will appropriate half of Ukraine’s mineral wealth, while at the same time dictating that Europeans must pay for its reconstruction and leave far-right parties free to incite racial hatred.

Ukraine and Europe reject these terms and have agreed to meet to organize European security between Europeans. France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Poland are very active.

This Europe defends the universal values of human rights, with freedoms for the people that do not hinder those of others. To this we can add the defense of women’s rights and environmental protection. It’s the only island of progress for a better society, and an island of justice that protects the strong and the weak alike. To achieve this, it must be able to defend itself with force. Europe must be the light that gives hope to the rest of the world.

It’s time for Europe to realize that it is a great power, and to ensure that it can defend its humanitarian and universal values.

Federal elections in Germany on February 23, 2025, and elections in Canada before October 2025, will either go the way of Trump and Putin, or defend democracies.

To achieve ambitious goals such as self-sufficiency in defense, Europe must be governable. This is not the case today because decisions can be blocked by any member country. The answer to this challenge is democratic: if the European Parliament becomes sovereign, decisions will be made by majority vote, greatly reducing the nuisance of “blocking” governments. Otherwise, Russia, the USA or China will always be able to invest heavily in a politician from a small country to give themselves the ability to block European power.

Russian assets in Europe (200 billion) must be seized to finance European defense. Some argue that this is contrary to international law, but the same law also stipulates that an invasion is prohibited and that it gives the right to reparations.

Why do some parties oppose it? Are they foreign agents ready to serve Russia?

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has already cost Europeans dearly (we have all effectively paid a “Putin Tax”) and they have every right to seize these assets for compensation.

The automotive industry, particularly in Germany, will see its sales in the United States decline because of the tariffs imposed by the US, and factories may close. This industrial heritage should be used to adapt these factories to the production of armaments for European defense instead of letting a valuable industrial tool die. This will save jobs and save precious time.
